Using biodiesel for power generation
Biodiesel is a ready replacement for gas oil (red diesel) to generate power in all sizes of generators from small standard diesel generators to larger Combined Heat and Power systems
Standard diesel generators
Biodiesel can be used in most diesel generators without any modifications. There are some measures that we recommend to ensure you get the best out of the fuel.
|Biodiesel Characteristics||What we recommend|
|Superior solvent properties of biodiesel will result in the gradual degradation of rubber components||Rubber seals, hoses, and gaskets should be replaced with biodiesel compatible materials such as Viton or Teflon|
|Biodiesel tends to gel and wax at a higher temperature than mineral diesel (known as the cloud point)||The fuel should be warmed before being pumped to the injectors through an in-line heating system. Alternatively, the coldflow effects can be mitigated by altering the blend (e.g. 20% biodiesel and 80% mineral diesel) during very cold spells|
|Biodiesel is hydroscopic so may absorb moisture from the air particularly when stored for a long time. This can be pronounced in standby generators where condensation can occur within the fuel tank during long periods of inactivity||A more frequent and stringent servicing routine should be implemented where the fuel, engine oil and filters are checked and changed when required to avoid damage to the engine|
Alternatively, you may wish to rent or buy a generator already designed to run on biodiesel – we can offer very attractive solutions. Contact us if you would like to know more about buying, renting, or using biodiesel in standard generators.
Combined Heat & Power (CHP)
Biodiesel can be used to generate on-site heat and power in commercial CHP applications such as schools, hospitals, large residential blocks, manufacturing plants etc.
Large-scale CHP applications are designed to run on 100% biodiesel, and are manufactured using specific materials, and incorporating bespoke features, e.g. insulated boiler rooms to keep the fuel from waxing.
